The winners of the competition are first year student John Goodliffe, 2nd year student Gavin Young, 16-year-old Nathan Smith took the prize for Best Apprentice and over all winner is final year student, Nick Siminon.
Nick said, “Winning is great, to be honest I’m quite surprised. My design for my boss stone is loosely based on one of the stones in Norwich Cathedral.”
Guest judge Ian Constantinides from BBC Television’s Restored to Glory was there to announce the winners and present prizes which included, tools, castings and books and for the overall winner a years membership to the Institute of Conservation.
Ian said, “I’m dead impressed by the work and I’m particularly impressed considering the timescale.”
The annual contest, staged by the college's Masonry Department, showcases the talent of the students who have just two and a half days to complete a stone boss carving – a decorative carved architectural stone work – using only hand tools.
The participants are all studying to achieve a Foundation Degree in Applied Architectural Stonework and Conservation at Weymouth College, run in partnership with Bournemouth University.
The Weymouth College Masonry department will be open and free to all visitors on Saturday 3rd of June and 7,8,9th June with students in residence carving stone and exhibiting the bosses as part of Dorset Art Week.
